Note: This post will make you feel awesome. It’s not a typical fitness and nutrition post but it will motivate the hell out of you. :)
“I can’t do this. I’ll never be good enough. I’m going to fail.”
You know what that voice inside your head says. You woke up one day feeling oh-so ready to tackle the world and suddenly the next day just before you head out for your morning run, your mind is boggled down in self-doubts.
It happens. And it happens to the best of us in every aspect of our lives, not just in fitness. I feel it too somedays. But every bouts of self-doubt provides you with an opportunity to believe in yourself and be awesome again.
Here are some lessons I’ve learned on how to believe in yourself and how you can do anything you want to do.
I wake up every single day feeling uncertain about my business. If you’re a new reader, which most of you probably are (and thank you so much for being here!), you probably didn’t know that I quit my job to pursue my passion in fitness and helping others. I’m currently managing this blog and I am working on a project for Singaporeans (that’s where I was from) which will be launching soon.
And let me tell you this, I doubt myself every morning. I do. But I snap out of it using these few lessons I’m going to outline below so that I get things done no matter how uncertain life may be.
I believe that believing in yourself to deliver something so uncertain is the foundation of all successes. It sucks to want to be successful and not have a clue on how the future looks but wanting to be successful is already the first part to success.
The same applies to fitness. You work hard every single day to change your lifestyle habits, to eat more servings of vegetables every day and to exercise at least three times a week but the future is unclear. You will never know whether you can succeed or not. But wanting to be successful, like I said, will get you there.
Identify your doubts
When I wake up most morning feeling like sh*t, I know then and there that my doubts are over-powering me. Learning how to recognise that your self-talk is acting on you negatively is crucial.
Here’s an example. You realise in the middle of the day after working through your 10,000 word thesis that this is not going to happen. You say things like “I can’t do this.” At that moment, identify the fact that you just made a boo boo and change your dear self-talk to I can’t do ________ yet. But I am working on it.
You don’t think an Olympic sprinter goes on to the starting line pumping out all the negativity before she starts the race right? I’m sure the world’s faster runner don’t do that. Self-talk is important. Try to identify the times when you’re just beating yourself up and change it right then and there.
Not later. Not after having just one more piece of cake. Now.
And move on.
Do whatever it takes
When I first started this blog, I didn’t know how to approach it at first. I just wanted to write. I questioned myself. Do I start off with just fitness posts? Maybe I should do some exercise videos. Or write recipes even though I’m clueless in the kitchen.
But there was one thing I knew I wanted the most.
I wanted to reach out to other bloggers in my niche. I wanted to say hi to them, and hopefully make friends with them and learn a thing or two about their blogging successes. I’m talking about Armi Legge from Evidence Mag. Or Steve Kamb from Nerd Fitness. Or even Mark from Mark’s Daily Apple. A-listers. Those who have been in this scene for years.
It was a crazy thought, I must say. They probably had a million and one better things to do then replying to a little newbie. But I had the drive. I needed to and I will do whatever it takes to reach out to them.
I sent out an email to them, just to say hi. It took them about a month to reply but I got it anyway. And that was the defining moment of my blogging life that I really knew I can do whatever I want with this blog and make it awesome.
Here’s a video to make you feel good about yourself. Warning – some tough love ahead.
“When you want to be successful as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful”. And it’s true.
Think about this, if you really want something, I really think you owe it to yourself to get it, no matter what the odds. If you want to lose weight, you’ll work through making an epic goal and get your mind and body into it. If you want to earn $500,000 a year, you’ll do whatever it takes to even earn $1000 more on the side per month.
Giving up is not in your books and failure is not an option.
If you’ve already taken the chance, you’ve beaten all the odds out there to make things happen no matter how uncertain it is and you’re probably already miles deep into making your dream a reality, don’t quit. Keep going and get a reward out of it.
Wherever you go, there is adventure. It’s out there, you just have to take chances. This is reality: there will never be a right time to do anything. You will never feel completely ready. Life is out there waiting for you. Go get it because it won’t hang around for too long.
If you’ve always wanted to start your own cupcake business (cupcake and fitness, it goes well, seriously!), then start now. There is no better time than now. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and take a chance for an unforgettable ride.
Take small steps with a long term perspective
If you’re telling me you want to lose 45lbs in one month, I will look into your eyes and say that you’re crazy. And then I’ll give you a hug. Because seriously, stop sh*tting yourself. Think about all the most successful entrepreneurs out there. Richard Branson, think he built the Virgin empire overnight? Even 10 years is not enough.
How successful we become is the result of time and consistency. If you’re not looking ahead into what you want to get out of this, there is no way you can even be close to smelling success. There is no shortcuts in life, my dear.
I know that by quitting my job and working on this blog won’t be an overnight success. I have to keep writing. Over and over again. And I’m ready to do that.
If you’re here reading this, be thankful that you’re still able to do that because so many times we forget that we don’t have it too bad compared to so many other out there. Remember how lucky you are to be alive. Be thankful that you woke up today. You have the potential to make today awesome. And you still have time to tell the people who means a lot to you how much they mean to you.
Seize that moment, because life is too short to keep living in our doubts. Complaining does not solve things. Solutions does.
Don’t like how tired you feel at the end of every day? Start walking to increase your energy. Or practise some yoga.
Don’t like your job and feel like you’re constantly stuck in a rut? Take up short courses on something you’ve always wanted to do. Or quit.
Didn’t get the job you’ve always wanted? Improve yourself. Try and try again. You’ll be willing to work your butt off if you really ‘always wanted it’.
When I was losing weight the first time, a lot of people told me that I can’t do it. I can’t lose weight and it will be just another diet I’m going on. Worse, there are people that say that I’m fat and it’s an incurable condition. (I know, harsh…) But I did it anyway. Why? Because I wanted it bad enough for myself. And on the sideline, I wanted them to swallow back their own words.
Here’s a tip on how to handle people who constantly puts you down: Agree with them. Tell them that yeah, perhaps you will never lose weight. But at least you’re trying. And if you don’t try, you’ll never know. Best one? Ask them, what would they do if they’re in your shoes.
Don’t let critics and haters bring you down. You’re better than that and you got this.
Be mindful with who you hang out with
This last point is important. If you keep hanging out with the same old people who are contented in achieving much lesser than what your goal and target is, you will probably never achieve the goal that you have.
Surround yourself with people who lifts you up, people who you see yourself become. And people whom you see yourself mirroring back. If you’re frustrated that you can’t grow to become the person you want to be, look around you and see who you are comfortable with. Here’s one quote I personally love by Ashley Conrad.
“More detrimental than what you can ever eat or drink are the toxic relationships that are holding you back from being the best you can be.”
We’ve all got choices, choose your friends wisely and choose the people who you surround with wisely too.
Life’s too short to spend it with people that don’t support you or your dreams.
Never ever ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. If you want it, go get it. Period.
Here’s to you…
I don’t know everything but I know that bad days happens. There will be days that you don’t believe in yourself and you think you can’t do anything.
I want to hear about the great things you wish to accomplish. I don’t care if you’re currently 60lbs overweight and don’t know how to do a squat. I don’t care if you’re in lots of debts and you’re jobless. Or if you probably a knee problem but you really want to run a half-marathon. I want to hear it and I want to help. I might not have the right answers but you’ve got a listening ear and I can give you some genuine advice.
Tell me by leaving a comment below with what you want to do with your life. You can do this.
