“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”
Maya Angelou. Extraordinary and phenomenal.
Maya Angelou, although she passed on yesterday at the age of 86, was a woman of a million souls. A woman who is influential and achieving. A woman who will forever be in our hearts, especially us entrepreneurs, game-changers and stuff-makers.
My first encounter to Maya Angelou was her quote right at the top of this post. I was 15 when I read that, and I remembered sitting in class next to a good friend of mine telling her what an extremely insightful quote that is.
My life hasn’t really been the same till now.
Angelou has taught me how to lift my spirits high and carve something I feel worthy doing. She has taught me how to make a steer when things don’t seem to go my way because the root of most problems lies in us. She has taught me the spirit of humanity and being kind to the people around us.
While she might have taught you something completely different, Maya Angelou will forever be placed close to our hearts. She will forever remain a woman in the history book of greatest people and I am very sure she has expanded our minds like no other.
Maya Angelou, thank you for showing us how to live an extraordinary and phenomenal life. Here are seven lesson that will always stay with us. Thank you for your words.
I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back.
Give as much as you get, or give more even before you get anything in return. That’s really enough to start.
One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential.
It doesn’t matter who you are, what you do and how much you have, you are born with the same potential as everyone else. Every newborn in this world has the power to create greatness in the world. Make every experience you get in the past worth it.
All great achievements require time.
It takes time to build something. It takes time to make something happen. And it takes time to change and grow. This applies to every single thing in life so never forget that.
We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.
Life is not a straight road. We’re endlessly faced with bumps, potholes and roadblocks. Many times we have to give up on something we’ve been pouring our hearts and souls with. But the ability to stay strong and undefeated can make a huge difference in your life. Do not give up.
Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.
While you’re making something out there for yourself, reflect upon how you can use that to make a difference in people’s lives. Perhaps a simple smile or even genuine thank you can be powerful enough.
You can’t forgive without loving. And I don’t mean sentimentality. I don’t mean mush. I mean having enough courage to stand up and say, ‘I forgive. I’m finished with it.’
Forgiveness is an act of bravery. Don’t take things personally. Nothing others do is because of you. Free yourself from the opinions and actions of others and you will be free from unnecessary suffering. The only way possible for you to move forward is to forgive yourself, your enemies, and the people around you who has brought you down. Not for the sake of them, but for the sake of you being done with it.
Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.
And after all that, don’t forget that you are a beautiful person. You have great potential and you can achieve every single thing you’ve dreamed of, if you really allow yourself to. Leave a glimmer of shine everywhere you go and nothing can stop you.
The true value of you lies from within and never forget that.
In honour of Maya Angelou, a phenomenal woman who was always proud of what she does.
